With God being the center of all we do, everything that is taught in 2nd Grade has God reflected in it. The 2nd Grade Religion curriculum is focused on the sacraments of Reconciliation and Communion. Both Math and Science follow the standards (Common Core and Next Generation Science). The Social Studies curriculum focuses on community, especially how communities change over time. Reading being the key to learning is a very important part of the 2nd Grade curriculum. In 2nd Grade the students become independent readers, which is very exciting to watch. Also, in Language Arts the students focus on learning the skills outlined in Common Core in a variety of activities.
Service and prayer opportunities unique to your class:
1st, 2nd and 3rd grades are blessed to be able to get together each Friday afternoon to learn about the Gospel reading for the upcoming Sunday Mass. After hearing the Gospel, the students have an activity to help reinforce the understanding of the Gospel.
At Christmas time the 2nd Graders make Christmas cards that are given to sick and those who don’t have family around.
During the school year 2nd Graders work together as a class and make cookies for the Men’s Shelter. This is a great way we show service, while learning about measurement.
Special projects and events:
2nd Grade is a big year for the students as they receive the sacraments of Reconciliation and Communion. As a school we celebrate the students having received these sacraments at our schools’ annual May Crowning Mass.
Field Trips:
2nd Grade has one major field trip each spring. The students tour the Tacoma Art Museum where they learn to appreciate art and understand museum etiquette.
Specialist Classes:
The 2nd Graders are blessed to have both Music and PE twice a week for ½ hour each day. They also have library and computer class once a week also for ½ hour.
