Welcome to First Grade!
We are dedicated to creating a positive and nurturing environment where students can grow in faith and knowledge. In first grade, we focus on developing well-rounded individuals who learn, worship, serve, give, share, and connect as disciples of Christ.
CURRICULUM HIGHLIGHTS

​Our curriculum blends faith formation with academic excellence, and students engage in a variety of enriching activities. Music and Physical Education are held twice a week, and students enjoy visiting the Library once a week.

READING - WONDERS READING & WRITING

Each week, a new reading skill or sound is introduced.

Daily phonics lessons focus on beginning and ending sounds, blends, syllables, and rhyming words.

Students read decodable books that reinforce the weekly skill, building fluency and comprehension.

MATH - MATH IN FOCUS

Students learn to count to 120 and practice counting patterns.

Introduction to place value and its importance in understanding numbers.

Memorization of addition and subtraction facts up to 18.

Mastery of double-digit addition and subtraction.

Understanding and recognition of plane and solid shapes.

WRITING

Opinion Writing: Students create pieces like book reviews and write about their favorite things.

Informative Writing: Students work on how-to books and explore informational writing on topics like plants, animals, and more.

Narrative Writing: First graders write non-fiction narratives about real-life experiences and enjoy creating fictional stories that spark their imagination.

SOCIAL STUDIES

Introduction to Communities: Understanding how people live, work, and help each other.

Students explore different cultures and countries with their Passport project.

SCIENCE

Mystery Science activities that promote inquiry and curiosity.

Lessons about animals, plants, sun and shadows, and moon and stars, helping students explore the world around them.

RELIGION
In first grade, we emphasize faith formation by integrating Catholic teachings into daily life:

Knowledge of the Faith: Learning about Creation, the Holy Trinity, and Bible stories.

Liturgical Education: Understanding the Mass, Sacraments, Holy Days, and Feast Days.

Moral Formation: Teaching virtues, the Ten Commandments, and living a moral life.

Students begin each week with the Monday Morning Offering (MMO) and attend Mass regularly.

BUDDY CLASS
Building community is key in our school! Each first-grade class is paired with a buddy class from fourth grade. The buddy classes attend Mass together and participate in shared classroom activities throughout the year, fostering friendships and mentorship across grades.
