In second grade, we strive to create a dynamic learning environment that nurtures both the academic and spiritual growth of every student. Our goal is to inspire curiosity, foster a love of learning, and deepen students' faith through hands-on learning and engaging experiences.

WRITING
Writing is a key focus in second grade, where students are encouraged to express their thoughts clearly and creatively:

Daily editing exercises to improve grammar and punctuation.

Opinion, informative and narrative writing.

SOCIAL STUDIES
Second graders explore the world around them through six exciting units:

Living in a Community: Learning about community life, good citizenship, and the roles of people in cities, towns, and suburbs.

Our Government: Understanding government roles, laws, elections, patriotism, and public service.

Looking at the Earth: Exploring landforms, bodies of water, maps, climate, conservation, and natural hazards.

Learn About People: Studying cultures, explorers, immigrants, and community heritage.

Past and Present: Exploring ancient civilizations, settlers, colonies, independence, and landmarks.

People at Work: Learning about goods and services, factories, work, income, and the role of volunteering.

SCIENCE
Second graders dive into hands-on science explorations through several key topics:

Matter and Its Interactions: Investigating the properties of solids, liquids, and gases, and experimenting with heating and cooling.

Ecosystems: Learning about plant pollination, animals, and their interactions within ecosystems.

Biological Evolution: Exploring living things, animal habitats, and how plants and animals adapt to their environments.

RELIGION
Our second graders grow in their Catholic faith through daily prayers, religious lessons, and service projects.
Key areas of focus include:

Virtues: Learning how to live a virtuous life

Monday Morning Opening: Special prayer and reflection days

Box of Joy: A service project that teaches students to help those in need

Sacraments: This is a special year for students as they prepare for First Communion and Reconciliation.

Knowledge of the Faith: Understanding Bible stories, the Holy Trinity, and the Creeds
-
Liturgical Education: Learning about the Mass, the Sacraments, and participating in Advent and Lent celebrations

Moral Formation: Understanding the Ten Commandments, sin, souls, and human dignity

Prayers: Students will learn and practice the Act of Contrition, Our Father (Lord's Prayer), Hail Mary, Glory Be, and the Morning Offering

Missionary Discipleship: Teaching students to spread the Good Word and be stewards in their community

BUDDY CLASS
Each second-grade class is paired with a buddy class from seventh grade. The buddy classes attend Mass together and participate in shared classroom activities throughout the year, fostering friendships and mentorship across grades.
CURRICULUM HIGHLIGHTS

​In addition to the classroom curriculum, students attend Music and Physical Education are held twice a week, and students enjoy visiting the Library once a week.

READING
Our language arts curriculum helps students strengthen their reading and writing skills:

Phonics: Review and learning of phonics, fluency, syllables, blends, rhymes, and vowel/consonant patterns.

Reading Groups: Small groups that focus on reading skills at each student's level.

Weekly stories and assessments to track progress.

Spelling words and parts of speech to enhance vocabulary and grammar.

DIBELS: Assessments to monitor reading fluency.

Participation in AR (Accelerated Reader) to encourage a love for reading.
